Ravi Kumar is a Mormon pioneer in India. It’s not always easy being one of the relatively few members in one of the most populated countries of the world. I’m struck by the faith required of Indian youth to leave for missionary service at a time when most of their peers are moving forward with their university studies. It’s not easy to do this when your culture doesn’t understand the value of a mission.
Ravi shares his story of converting to the church in his youth and the journey to his mission. Still very active in the church, Ravi has a stalwart commitment to not only his local fellow members, but also his continual missionary efforts. Ravi truly lives up to his saying, “Once a missionary… always a missionary…”

“Elder Wadsack-Stewart and I almost baptized all our investigators who are with the baptismal dates and we do not have any new investigators in our teaching pool. Right after Sunday church meetings, my companion and I reached our apartment and we were kinda sad that we do not have anyone to teach. We prayed before we leave that we may find someone to teach that day. This story happened in Chennai.
In the episode, Ravi speaks of returning from his mission and driving into a bush off the road because he hadn’t driven a car for two years…. BUT he was excellent at crossing busy roads! I think this photo gives a sense of the skill he acquired. Amazing!

Ravi’s beautiful wife, Keerthi had a huge influence on Ravi choosing to serve a mission. At a time when he felt the pressure to continue his university studies and secure a good job, his then girlfriend and now, wife encouraged him to make the sacrifice.

The family legacy continues. Ravi’s brother Rakesh just returned from his own mission!
